[video] Robotic company builds Spider-Man arms for life in a cyborg society

Moms with multiple daily tasks will surely appreciate a new pair of arms.

A Japanese robotics company named Jizai has developed a unique robotic limb system called "Arms." These robotic arms, somewhat reminiscent of the famous Spider-Man villain Doctor Octopus, provide the wearer with additional sets of arms.

In a visually captivating promotional video, two models showcase the capabilities of the Arms by dancing gracefully to classical music. The robotic appendages mimic the movements of their human arms, creating a beautiful display of human augmentation.

Unlike traditional approaches that focus on practical applications, such as assisting individuals with limited mobility, Jizai's goals for the Arms system – described in a research titled “Social Digital Cyborgs: The Collaborative Design Process of Jizai Arms” and published on the ACM Digital Library portal – are more abstract.

The company says it aims to “facilitate social interactions among multiple wearers, allowing for arm exchanges and exploring the possibilities of interactions in a cyborg society,” a vision that goes beyond simply using the arms to pick up objects.

The inspiration for this innovative system comes from a 1963 short story written by Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata. In the story, a girl lends one of her arms to her suitor for the night. Although a work of fiction, the story's concept resonated with Jizai's team.

The company said on its website that advancements in human-machine integration technologies would allow people to physically experience the world imagined by Kawabata.

Jizai has not mentioned what is the technology behind this project (which includes a “Body” component) or whether artificial intelligence has been employed to guide the arms’ movements.

Nor does it state what are the practical uses of extra arms in daily life.

On the other hand, the research illustrates a possible evolution of human-machine synergy. Workers at a packaging line and moms with multiple tasks at home will surely appreciate this innovation.
