The South Korean tech company Samsung intends to revolutionize the foldable smartphone market with the launch of an anticipated tri-fold smartphone later this year, presumably by next fall.
The technology reviewing outlets GMS Arena and TomsGuide note that the manufacturer faces production constraints related to complex design, which means the device will be available in extremely limited quantities. Initially expected to have a production run of around 300,000 units, the company updated the number down to 200,000.

The tech giant has reportedly informed major component manufacturers about its plans, with parts production slated to begin in the second quarter of 2024 (April to June). The upcoming tri-fold device, which will feature a screen size of just under 10 inches when fully unfolded, is still undergoing design refinements, according to industry sources.
Samsung's tri-fold smartphone is expected to introduce a new folding mechanism distinct from Huawei's Mate XT – its closest rival in the foldable smartphone market. Unlike its competitor, Samsung's model will ensure that when folded, the display remains protected, enhancing durability.
However, the cutting-edge technology involved in the manufacturing process presents significant challenges, which may explain the limited production numbers.
Pricing is another crucial factor. Reports indicate that this device could be the most expensive foldable smartphone Samsung has ever released, potentially limiting its market appeal. No technical specifications are available as of now, which makes it difficult to assess the future smartphone’s marketing success.
As a matter of fact, the smartphone - which in unfolded shape looks like a small TV screen - doesn’t even have a specific name.

Despite challenges, Samsung remains committed to expanding its foldable lineup, with expectations to sell approximately 7 million foldable devices in 2024.
Of these, the company projects sales of 3 million Flip7 units, 2 million Fold7 units, 900,000 Flip FE units, and some 200,000 tri-fold smartphones.
As Samsung pushes the boundaries of mobile innovation, the success of its tri-fold device could determine the future of multi-fold smartphones. With limited availability and a high price tag, it remains to be seen whether consumers will embrace this next-generation foldable technology.
