[videos] Russian capital under drone attack

At least 25 unmanned aerial vehicles hit Moscow on 30 May, no casualties reported.

Between 25 and 32 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) hit the Russian capital and surrounding areas in the morning of 30 May, with the authorities claiming that five to eight drones were shot down by the Pantsir air defense systems or jammed by electronic warfare and fell to the ground.

The Russian Defense Ministry blamed Ukraine for the attack without providing evidence of this allegation while Ukraine has not assumed the responsibility for the raid.

Pictures and videos from witnesses in social media showed explosions and debris of UAVs scattered across Moscow streets.

Baza, a Telegram-based independent outlet, said at least three drones crashed into residential buildings in the streets Profsoyuznaya, Atlasova, and Leninsky, but did not detonate. A part of residents there were evacuated.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin told the press that the raid inflicted minimum material damages and two people were treated for minor injuries on the spot. There were no fatal casualties. The mayor assured that there were no reasons to panic.

The drone raid forced the authorities to turn on the jamming equipment in order to confuse UAV navigation.

Taxi drivers and motorists complained that the GPS signal was unavailable. Motor traffic was difficult in many parts in the southwest of Moscow and the sites where the drones exploded or crashed were sealed off.

The military enacted a plan coded Typhoon. No details about the type of drones were immediately available.

Alexey Rogozin (son of former Rosskosmos director Dmitry Rogozin), head of the Center for the Development of Transport Technologies, told journalists that the attack was carried out by previously unknown UAVs with "duck" aerodynamics.

"The power unit is provided with an internal combustion engine, the wingspan is no less than 4 meters, and the theoretical range is between 400 and 1,000 km. The cost of each vehicle can be estimated at $30,000 to $200,000," he said.

A day earlier, the Russian forces launched a second UAV and missile attack on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities this week. Overall, at least 30 drones and missiles.

Last week, Ukraine responded to the worst Russian missile attack with a drone raid on Belgorod, a Russian border city.

NATO earlier warned Ukraine not to engage its enemy on Russian territory with Western weapons but a leaked report claims President Volodimir Zelenski secretly plotting to carry out attacks on Russian cities as an "eye-for-eye" response.
