Intimate relations protect against cognitive decline

Study proves that sex is beneficial for seniors’ brain functioning.

Getting naughty and romantically-involved is a sure way to protect older adults’ brains from cognitive deterioration, according to a study published by University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center (NORC) in the Journal of Sex Research.

The NORC said in a statement that by the mid-2030’s the number of Americans aged 65 and older will top 77 million and the United States will then have more retirement aged adults than children.

The research, described as the "first nationally representative study of the intersection between social and intimate relationships and healthy aging," employed data from the University of Chicago's National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project to determine whether seniors’ sex lives can be linked to their cognitive abilities as they age.

Good sex matters

The scientists worked with data collected from 1,683 individuals aged 62 and older, who shared information about their cognitive health and were sexually involved in some way — either married, cohabiting, or had a romantic, intimate, or sexual partner.

They found that elders aged 75 to 90 who had sex at least once a week demonstrated a better cognitive functionality than counterparts who were less intimately active or at all within the past year at the time of the survey.

Furthermore, the study highlights that not all sexual experiences are equally beneficial. The research indicates that for individuals aged 62 to 74, the quality of their sexual encounters plays a pivotal role in determining whether engaging in sexual activity yields cognitive advantages.

According to the NORC’s findings, individuals in this age group who were in partnerships but reported dissatisfaction in their sex lives did not seem to enjoy the same cognitive benefits as those who found their sexual experiences to be satisfying and pleasurable.

Therefore, the scientists concluded that satisfaction from sex and pleasure from intimacy in general play a key role in delaying cognitive decline. Sex for the sake of health doesn’t quite work unless you are fully accomplished.
