Meta unveils smart glasses that let you spy and talk to AI

Its 12-megapixel camera may become a true privacy nightmare.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta (former Facebook), announced at a recent Meta Connect Event that the company started marketing new Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, which are endowed with a 12-megapixel camera capable of snapping photos and shooting video at 1080 pixels and 30 frames per second.

According to a Meta blog statement, the camera offers the ability to livestream up to 30 minutes on Instagram or Facebook, appealing to those aspiring to embody the tech-savvy influencer role.

Meta’s voice replicating AI is a dangerous security loophole

Ray-Ban was developed on the basis of the first-generation smart glasses, in partnership with the same company – EssilorLuxottica, an Italian-French manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses and optical equipment.

The glasses come with a charging case, which holds up to eight additional charges, for a total of 36 hours of use.

Anticipating the reaction of critics concerned about privacy, Meta said it added a flashing light feature to the glasses in a bid to prevent secret recording but the LED signal is poorly noticeable in a brightly lit environment.

The user wearing the glasses effectively spies on the interlocutor. And as if this is not enough, Meta has promised to upload an AI-powered software update that will enable users to identify landmarks and gather information about their surroundings hands-free.

Users can also engage with Meta AI – the artificial intelligence-powered conversational assistant – just by using their voice.

Shipping to US-based stores started in mid-October and the price starts at 299 US dollars, while pre-orders are accepted at a new website
