Russia plots to assassinate Ukrainian leader, again

President Zelenski claims Operation Maidan 3 is underway.

Russia’s special services have planned and launched a new attempt to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, who annoys the Kremlin with his refusal to submit to Vladimir Putin.

Zelenski, who has survived multiple attempted assassinations since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, disclosed in an interview with the Sun on Monday that he was aware of Russia's latest plot to oust him from office by the end of this year.

The current campaign to remove him is codenamed Operation Maidan 3, an allusion to the Ukrainian mass protests in 2014, which led to the end of Viktor Yanukovich’s regime.

The operation, according to Zelenski, is geared towards changing the presidency, utilizing any means necessary. While the deadline set by the Kremlin for this endeavor is January 2024, he Zelenski clarified that the change might not necessarily involve killing him but could manifest through various instruments at Russia's disposal – though his physical elimination is preferred.

Zelenski, as Ukraine's wartime leader, has become a symbol of the country's steadfast refusal to succumb to Russian influence and active mobilization of the West to support Ukrainian military resistance.

But what if the Russian plan succeeds? In the unfortunate event of Zelenski's death, the head of the Ukrainian parliament would assume the presidency, in accordance with the country's constitution. Ruslan Stefanchuk of the Servant of the People party and a lawyer by training is now the chairman of the legislative chamber.
