OpenAI’s ChatGPT was facing global disruptions of services on mobile and desktop devices on 11 January 2024. Users across many social media have complained that they were unable to access the bot or the previous chats and topics.
Hundreds of users on the platform X, for example, complained that they had received an error message stating “internal server error” or “the server is having a problem, please try again later.”
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT – currently the world’s most popular generative AI chatbot based on Large Language Models – has not issued any formal explanation about the outage.
The chatbot was not working on desktop and Android devices, while Apple smartphones were reportedly working fine.
A massive DDoS attack is suspected to take ChatGPT down. Another cause might be the increase in user traffic after the launch of the GPT Store, which allows GPT+ subscribers to publish custom GPTs built on top of GPT-4. It also enables developers to monetize their custom GPTs.
In addition, the company has introduced a new ChatGPT Team subscription, offering access to all ChatGPT Plus features for 25 US dollars a month per user.
Last time ChatGPT was hit by massive outage was on 9 November 2023.
