Former NASA astronaut is among candidates for U.S. vice-presidency

Would Mark Kelly, now a senator from Arizona, boost Kamala Harris’ chances for election?

United States vice-presidents traditionally oversee the space programs and particularly the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) and a former NASA astronaut is likely to be the next VP.

Media reports are mounting about the shortlisting of Mark Kelly, a veteran Navy captain, ex-space shuttle commander and currently a U.S. senator representing Arizona, among seven potential candidates scrutinized for the role of running mate for Kamala Harris, who has replaced Joe Biden as the almost certain Democratic nominee for U.S. presidency.

Senator Kelly, aged 60, has been a longtime supporter of both Harris and Biden. Following Biden’s exit from the race and subsequent endorsement of Harris, Kelly expressed his support for her on his social media account, stating he "couldn't be more confident" in her ability to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

Despite the excitement surrounding his potential nomination, Kelly remains modest about his role. "This is not about me. […] I'm going to be focused on doing everything I can to make sure she is elected because we cannot have a repeat of what we saw between 2016 and 2020," he told ABC earlier this week.

If chosen and if Harris wins, Merk Kelly would make history as the first former astronaut to serve as vice president, a role that traditionally oversees NASA and the space programs.

Among other candidates being considered are North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. However, Kelly’s unique background strengthens his candidacy. As a former Naval pilot, NASA astronaut, and gun control advocate, he stands out among the VP hopefuls.

It remains to be seen what Donald Trump, who has a habit of ridiculing his adversaries, has to say about an opponent who formidably overshadows his choice for VP, the 39-year-old senator from Ohio J.D. Vance.
