The Russians control the fourth of them, which is the largest nuclear power station in Europe.

Vladimir Putin’s plans to bleed Ukraine out of energy will be reinforced with attacks on three nuclear plants that remain under Ukrainian control. Speaking to the United Nations Security Council in New York on 24 September, President Volodimir Zelenski said he had proof that the Kremlin was preparing to strike the nuclear civilian infrastructure in his country.

“Now, as we near the third winter of this war, Russia is once again trying to destroy our energy system, and this fall, they’re being even more cynical,” Zelenski was quoted as saying in an official press release.

“They’re preparing to target our nuclear power plants, three of them – we have this information, and we have proof of this. If Russia is ready to go that far, it means – nothing you value matters to Moscow. This kind of Russian cynicism will keep striking if it’s given any room in the world.”

While he did not name any of the plants, there are three of them that still function – Rivne and Khmelnitsky in the west, and Pivdennoukrainsk in the south. The fourth, in Zaporizhia, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. Nor did Zelensky showed evidence of his allegations.

Russia has been targeting the Ukrainian energy infrastructure with ballistic and cruise missiles ever since its troops retreated from the Kyiv region and other northern parts of the country in April – May 2022.

Zelenski also claimed earlier that Russia was using Chinese satellites to take pictures of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, hinting that the sole purpose was to strike them. His government formally notified the International Atomic Energy Agency about the threat.
