Russian leader’s mistress earns $140,000 a month from state-run media projects

Alina Kabayeva’s is the mother of Vladimir Putin’s two sons.

A recent investigation by the Telegram channel “Mozhem Obyasnit” has revealed that Alina Kabayeva, former Olympic champion and head of the board of directors at Russia’s National Media Group (NMG), receives an annual salary of 155.4 million rubles (approximately $1.7 million).

This translates to a staggering monthly income of nearly 12.95 million rubles ($140,000).

The investigation, which examined Kabayeva’s income declaration, also uncovered that she holds bank deposits totaling 335,000 rubles across two Russian banks, VTB and SMP. However, her past earnings suggest a much higher financial flow: in 2018, she reportedly received an astounding 785 million rubles from NMG, followed by 55.4 million in 2019 and 300 million in 2020.

NMG controls a significant portion of Russia’s media landscape, including a 50% stake in Channel One, as well as ownership of STS Media, REN TV, and multiple other television networks and media outlets. Given its role in state propaganda, both NMG and Kabayeva herself have been subjected to Western sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

While Kabayeva’s lucrative income has long raised questions, investigative reports suggest that her financial security is closely linked to her personal ties with Russianleader Vladimir Putin.

The Dossier Center, a Russian investigative organization, reported earlier that Putin has two young sons, Ivan and Vladimir, with Kabayeva. According to the report, the first son, Ivan, was born in 2015 in the Swiss city of Lugano, while the second, Vladimir, was born in 2019 in Moscow.

The children reportedly live under strict security measures, residing in Putin’s luxurious estates. They attend an educational center in Valdai, designed and built specially for them. Both are taught by private tutors recruited through English Nanny, an elite agency, with a preference for South African teachers following Western sanctions. The educators are allegedly prohibited from leaving the premises of the presidential residences.

Despite the secrecy surrounding Putin’s personal life, the investigation points to Kabayeva’s privileged financial position as a direct result of her role as the mother of the dictator’s children. In spite of their shared parenthood, Putin and Kabayeva never announced any official engagement or marriage.

Her lavish salary from NMG, a company closely tied to the Kremlin, underscores how financial rewards are distributed among Putin’s inner circle, ensuring the prosperity of those closest to him.

Average salaries in Russia amount to 80,000 rubles - or around $760 - a month. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, it is almost double this sum while in regions twice as less.
