China claims possession of the world's first barrage weapon to counter drone swarms

Chinese military are learning from the Russia-Ukraine war.

China has successfully tested and will adopt what it claims to be a groundbreaking anti-drone barrage weapon system, designed to effectively neutralize drone swarms and incoming missiles.

This innovative system, according to the Chinese government-controlled Global Times, represents a significant advancement in air defense technology, addressing the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on modern battlefields.

The new air defense system employs a "barrage" strategy, creating a wall of projectiles to intercept multiple aerial targets simultaneously. Unlike traditional "point-to-point" interception methods, this "plane-to-point" approach enhances the probability of neutralizing fast-moving threats such as drone swarms and missiles.

The system has 16 tightly arranged gun barrels and specialized munitions, allowing for rapid reloads and high-density firepower. The modular design enables deployment on various platforms, including trucks, armored vehicles, and warships, providing flexibility for different operational scenarios.

Its capabilities extend beyond UAVs, effectively countering high-speed munitions like missiles, as well as rockets, mortar shells, and howitzer rounds. The system can also engage ground or surface targets when necessary.

The ammo specifications, platform details, or manufacturer were not immediately available.

China’s new anti-drone barrage weapon system is a response to the growing threat of UAVs, which play a major role in the Russia-Ukraine war since 2022. The Chinese military leadership hopes there will be a quick adoption of it for the army’s needs.
