Meta secretly blocked Apple Intelligence on its iOS apps

Apple features got removed from Facebook and Instagram.

Meta Platforms has quietly removed Apple Intelligence features from its iOS apps, making them unavailable on Facebook and Instagram.

The change, which was first spotted by the Brazilian publication Sorcererhat Tech, has not been publicly acknowledged by Meta, though tools like Writing Tools — which help users write, edit, and proofread text using Apple Intelligence — are not available in any of Meta's apps on iPhones and iPads.

Normally, users can access these features by tapping a text field, but this option is missing in Meta apps. Apple introduced Apple Intelligence with iOS 18, and it became available to the public in October with the release of iOS 18.1. While most apps support these new features automatically, developers can choose to disable them — and Meta has apparently done just that.

In addition, Meta’s apps don’t allow users to create or send Genmoji, which are AI-generated emojis from Apple. Instagram has also removed support for adding keyboard stickers and Memoji to Stories, something that used to be available.

Although Meta hasn’t explained why its apps block these Apple Intelligence features, it’s likely because the company wants people to use Meta AI instead. Meta’s own AI tools offer similar features, like editing text and creating images, and are already built into its apps.

Last year, Apple and Meta had talked about a possible deal to bring Meta’s Llama AI model to Apple Intelligence. But Apple reportedly walked away due to concerns over Meta’s privacy practices.

The two companies often clash over App Store rules and privacy issues. It was Meta last year to complain in Brazil about Apple's tracking transparency feature, prompting the authorities to investigate.

Meta announced in 2024 that it was working on its own AI search engine, eventually to get rid of Google and Bing.
