Google's intelligent machine taught itself a language it wasn't programmed to know

The company's management was surprised by the artificial intelligence program's initiative.

Google's artificial intelligence (AI) has learned the Bengali language, which is currently spoken by 300 million people in Bangladesh and India. This is a proprietary initiative of an experimental AI program, as Bengali was not programmed into the machine code.

The news was confirmed to CBS TV channel by Chief Technology Officer James Manyika and CEO Sundar Pichai, both stating that they do not know why the AI decided to learn this language.

The "skill" of translation into Bengali was discovered by Google engineers who asked questions in this language, to which the machine answered in a fluent manner, effortlessly, proving an excellent grammar.

The two avoided saying whether this is a sign of evolution of consciousness in AI, calling the process of acquiring new skills (through experience) "a mystery even to us."

Asked why they let loose things they don't understand themselves, Pichai said "no one really even understands how the human brain is functioning."

It is unclear whether this is the recently launched autonomous bot Bard, currently in the testing phase, or another Google AI program.
