Swedish startup designs flat-packed electric microcars

The 450-kg Luvly O is due to roll out in 2024.

A Swedish automotive firm, established in 2015, has borrowed IKEA’s principle of space saving to design a two-seat microcar that can be shipped flat-packed, just like furniture.

The 450-kilogram prototype called Luvly O features a maximum range of 62 miles (100 kilometers) and a top speed of 55 miles per hour (88.5 km/h). The Stockholm-based startup expects the first cars to reach their buyers this year.

While the car would leave the production line packed in a box, their new owners won’t be able to assemble Luvly O by themselves; they would need a licensed operator to put the parts together following safety standards and regulations.

Luvly designers claim that compared to conventional electric cars, their vehicle saves up to 80% of energy during production and operation. Virtually all Luvly vehicle parts are recyclable and most can be made from renewable materials.

The car's frame is made out of padded aluminum and plastic foam, capable of absorbing the impact in a collision.

Luvly O runs on by two rechargeable 16-kilogram batteries, which can be swapped with another set anytime.

The final model would cost somewhere under 10,000 euros (11,000 US dollars), which isn’t cheap considering the simple design, poor performance, and minimalist comfort.

However, bearing in mind that car parking space is getting scarcer and speed limits stay low in cities, it could be worth that money.
