The Italian jewelry maker beats the previous record holder by the breadth of a human hair.

Bulgari, a known Italian jewelry brand company, has redesigned its mechanical Octo Finissimo Ultra Cosc watch to reclaim the record for the world's thinnest watch. It is just 1.7 mm thin - the dimensions of a five-pence coin – or 0.1 mm thinner than the previous version.

Bulgari’s achievement surpassed the previous record holder, also an Italian company, succeeding to beat Richard Mille's 1.75-mm RM UP-01 Ferrari by a margin as thin as a human hair, just 0.05 mm, the Dezeen learned.

Bulgari has not yet published the details regarding the Octo Finissimo Ultra Cosc, which had been produced in a limited edition, just 20 pieces. The new version could be manufactured in a similar number.

By comparison, Richard Mille released 100 RM UP-01 Ferrari watches, which are fully mechanical too.

Each Octo Finissimo Ultra Cosc watch will feature a unique QR code linking to an online product manual. Furthermore, a specially designed case will allow for automatic setting and winding with the push of a button.

Bulgari boasts that the Octo Finissimo Ultra Cosc represents a leap forward in accuracy. It is the thinnest watch ever to be awarded the chronometer mark by Switzerland's independent Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), meeting strict criteria for daily timekeeping accuracy.

Both Bulgari and Richard Mille advertise their luxury watches for sale to exclusive customers without revealing the price, which could soar as high as hundreds of thousands of dollars. These devices are usually made manually and contain large doses of platinum and stainless steel.

To protect the mechanism in lieu of this additional layer, the case back is made of tungsten carbide – an ultra-durable metal alloy – while the front of the case and the matching strap are made of sandblasted titanium.

With the new release, Bulgari adds a ninth world record to its collection, intensifying its competition with esteemed watchmakers such as Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet, and Piaget.
