The Line, which Saudi Arabia is building across the desert and mountains in the northern part of country, will accommodate fewer than 300,000 residents, Bloomberg learned.

This is five times less than anticipated when The Line, one of the futuristic cities developed within Neom, an ambitious $1.5-trillion national modernization project of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, formally kicked off in January 2021.

Expected to complete by 2030, The Line would be 170-km long, 200-m wide, and 500-m tall, resting on 34 square kilometers.

Project officials, however, predict that only 2.4 kilometers of the Red Sea coast urbanity would be completed by that year as some investors have withdrawn from the project for a variety of reasons.

The kingdom’s Public Investment Fund, which owns and is funding the megaproject, has not commented on the report.

Crown Prince Mohammad want Neom to become a showpiece of Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation and a testbed for technologies that could revolutionize daily life. Neom would also include an industrial ground, ports and tourism infrastructure.

Overall, it would consist of 15 interconnected hubs.
