America’s tallest skyscraper will have "unlimited height"

Construction of the Legends Tower will kick off in the upcoming fall.

Oklahoma City Council approved in June a rezoning application for Legends Tower, a supertall skyscraper designed by California architecture studio Architects Orange (AO) that, if completed, will be the tallest in the United States. Approval gives green light to an "unlimited" height for the skyscraper, part of the Boardwalk at Bricktown development, which includes three smaller structures.

The decision comes after the initial approval for the height came in April from the city's planning commission.

The proposed plans for the skyscraper, which is backed by developer Matteson Capital, put the skyscraper as 1,907 feet tall (581 meters), significantly taller than the current tallest structure – the Freedom Tower in New York, which stands at 1776 feet tall (541 meters).

If built, the tower will be the tallest in the US and the fifth tallest in the world.

"AO is delighted that the Oklahoma City Council has approved the development team's request for unlimited height for the Boardwalk at Bricktown," said AO. "We are grateful that the City Council has embraced the vision of Matteson Capital and the entire design team to transform the city into a global destination."

The original proposal was put forward earlier this year, with a height of 1,750 feet (533 meters) for the skyscraper. Shortly afterwards, the developer announced that they had changed the plans and were asking permission from the city to build at the currently approved height.

The proposed site, in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown neighborhood, is currently used for surface parking.

The tower would form the lankiest and largest component of the proposed 5 million-square-foot mixed-use development, Boardwalk at Bricktown, designed by Orange County, California–based firm Architects Orange (AO). Renderings suggest a splashy retail-and-entertainment podium, replete with a 17,000-square-foot lagoon and roof-decks with city views, and three other 345-foot-tall towers housing nearly 600 market-rate apartments, over 100 workforce apartments, just under 500 hotel rooms, and almost 100 condominiums.

The Legends Tower, if built, will add a further 400 hotel rooms, 1,000 luxury apartments, nearly 100 condominiums, and just under 50 affordable apartments. Notably, according to The Oklahoman, the development’s projected 1,776 residential units, would effectively double the amount of housing in downtown Oklahoma City.
