[video] Google releases AI-packed Pixel 9 phone to race with Apple

The price starts from $800 for a standard version.

Google unveiled on 13 August its next generation of Pixel phones, two months earlier than scheduled, at an event near its Mountain View headquarters in California. The company hopes the early launch will give it an edge over Apple's upcoming iPhone, which, too, features artificial intelligence technology.

Google's Pixel 9 lineup includes a dedicated chip for AI-powered services, ensuring better privacy and security. The phones will leverage Gemini technology, enabling a more conversational AI assistant with ten human-like voices and various functionalities. The Gemini assistant can provide creative ideas, though it had mixed results during live demonstrations.

The Pixel 9 will also feature the "Magic Editor," an AI tool for transforming photos by adding or altering elements seamlessly.

Buyers of the Pixel 9 phones will get a one-year free subscription to the advanced Gemini Assistant, which will later require a monthly fee.

The standard Pixel 9 is priced at $800, while the Pixel 9 Pro will cost $1,000 or $1,100, depending on the size. A new foldable Pixel phone will be available for $1,800.

Apple is also focusing on AI with its next iPhone, expected to debut during the first week of September. The iPhone 16 will likely feature a specialized chip to support advanced AI functions, enhancing Siri's capabilities and other tasks while maintaining user privacy.
