Former tech executives launch startup to build AI Agent operating system

The new entity has raised $56 million in seed capital.

A group of former executives from Google, Stripe, and Meta has launched /dev/agents, a San Francisco-based startup dedicated to creating a groundbreaking operating system for AI agents.

The new company, co-founded by David Singleton, Hugo Barra, Ficus Kirkpatrick, and Nicholas Jitkoff, has raised $56 million in seed funding, Singleton announced in a post on X.

Index Ventures and Alphabet's growth fund, CapitalG, led the round, with participation from other notable investors like Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy.

AI agents represent a new frontier in artificial intelligence, going beyond chatbots to perform complex tasks autonomously, such as writing code, adjusting system resources, or even functioning as trusted digital assistants, CapitalG noted on its blog.

The fragmented nature of current development platforms has created significant barriers for developers and consumers alike.

The vision behind /dev/agents is to create a unified, cloud-based operating system that simplifies the development and deployment of AI agents across devices, from smartphones to laptops and cars.

By drawing on the team's extensive experience with platforms like Android, Chrome OS, and Oculus, the company aims to establish an "Android-like moment" for AI.

“Developing effective AI agents today is like building mobile apps before Android,” said CEO David Singleton, who previously served as Stripe's CTO and VP of engineering for Google Android. “Our mission is to make AI agents as ubiquitous and accessible as apps by providing developers with the tools and frameworks they need.”

The operating system will include new user interface patterns, reimagined privacy models, and a developer-friendly platform that supports trusted AI agents. This foundation will enable AI agents to operate seamlessly across multiple devices, empowering users to interact with AI as naturally as they would with human colleagues while software working as intelligently and collaboratively as humans.

By addressing key challenges - such as fragmented development landscapes, limited privacy models, and outdated app design - the team at /dev/agents believes it can usher in a transformative era where AI becomes an integral part of everyday life.

With its deep technical expertise and a clear vision, /dev/agents is already valued at $500 million.
