[video] U.S. diplomat says Trump deliberately seeks to destroy European Union

Is it time for the Europeans to forge a federation?

A former U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Anthony Gardner, believes that President Donald Trump bears in mind a plan to destroy the E.U.

“It’s time for European leaders including [Keir] Starmer to realize that this administration actually wants to destroy the European Union,” the diplomat said in a recent interview, adding that while it sounds exaggerate – as a matter of fact it’s not.

Europe needs to step up and move beyond the so many declarations, Gardner said. It’s the moment of Europeans to tell Donald Trump that they will stay behind Ukraine because it’s fundamental for their interest to prevent the Russians from taking over Ukraine or threatening their borders.

Asked whether Europe can club together in the event of U.S. support withdrawal, Gardner thinks that E.U. nations can certainly fill in some of the gap but still would need some sort of backstop from Washington.

“I can hope and anticipate that Europe can broker a mineral deal that would at least convince the White House it has an economic stake in a future of a democratic stable country,” the former ambassador stated.

While calling for a closer integration within the E.U., the American diplomat fell short of suggesting a concrete political solution or form of cohesion. Nor did he explain why would Trump want to destroy the E.U.

Anthony Gardner is currently the managing partner of Brookfield's private equity group, based in London.
