Four Nordic countries - Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden - have signed a technical arrangement on harmonizing ammunition certification, a measure designed to ensure that their armed forces have access to the same types of weapons and ammunition, the Finnish Defense Ministry said.
Under this arrangement, the four nations – which are NATO members – will be able to procure ammunition together and to build shared reliable supply chains.
The decision is a step towards unifying the standards of ammunition amid a greater integration of defense capabilities in the Scandinavia.

By harmonizing ammunition certification processes, the Nordic countries aim to streamline procurement, improve interoperability, and strengthen regional security. This cooperation is particularly relevant in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions with Russia.
Another reason is that the United States is no longer credited as a reliable partner, given President Donald Trump’s reluctance to reaffirm U.S.
security guarantees for its European allies.
How can this help?
A common certification process ensures that all four countries use compatible ammunition, reducing logistical challenges during joint operations and training exercises. It also enhances operational effectiveness by allowing forces from different Nordic nations to integrate seamlessly during military engagements.
At the same time, pooling resources for ammunition purchases allows for bulk procurement, leading to cost savings and increased purchasing power. This reduces reliance on individual national stockpiles and mitigates potential supply shortages during crises.

A unified certification process ensures that all member states have access to the same types of ammunition, preventing supply chain disruptions. It enhances the ability to respond quickly to emerging threats, as forces can rely on standardized munitions and streamlined resupply logistics.
The harmonization of ammunition certification strengthens the Nordic countries' ability to act collectively in the event of a security crisis, especially in the wake of growing Russian aggression, complementing NATO’s efforts and making the region more resilient against external threats.
More importantly, by reducing dependence on external suppliers, the Nordic nations ensure greater self-sufficiency in military operations, decreasing vulnerabilities to foreign supply disruptions.
